BBC and Guardian sites up for 'Web Oscars'

The BBC and theguardian.com have both scored well in the nominations for the 2008 Webby Awards, where the best of the world's websites compete in the "Oscars of the internet".

BBC websites are up for four Webbys this year, including the bbc.co.uk/news, shortlisted in the prestigious news category site, running against CNN, Discovery News, the New York Times and Wired.

Radio 1's Meet the DJs online feature is picked out in the music category and the BBC World Service site is nominated for the radio award. The corporation is also up for the religion and spirituality award.

Guardian.co.uk is nominated for the same three awards as last year, running against the New York Times, the Independent, Variety, and Wall Street Journal Online for the best online newspaper website award.

The Guardian's podcasts are competing against HowStuffWorks, The Onion, TED, and the National Gallery of Arts in the podcast category.

And the paper's Comment is Free is shortlisted for best political blog alongside the Huffington Post, The Swamp, Why Tuesday? and Wired's Danger Room.

Last year, theguardian.com was named best online newspaper for the third consecutive year.

Other UK sites up for a Webby this year include FT.com's Alphaville blog, nominated in the best business blog section; and Transport for London's site, designed by Detica, shortlisted in the government category.

Virgin Radio International is also nominated in the radio category; while Moo.com, the London-based start up, has been nominated in the retail section.

The cult US hit ICanHasCheezburger.com is up for the humour and weird Webby award. Facebook, Bebo, ChangeEverything, Ning and Flock are all up for the social networking category, from which MySpace is notably absent this year.
